Fur Rondy!

An Eventful weekend...and cold!

Friday was the start of Fur Rondy, which continues til next weekend. Josh and I had plans to head downtown to all the events Saturday morning, but there was a change of plans and he had to go into work at 5pm and wasn't able to make it. So I went with our friend Carrie and her two kids and it ended up being one of my favorite days, and something I will never forget. I mostly will never forget Fur Rondy because it was so COLD!!!!. It was about 14 degrees and the wind chill was even lower. We saw the dog sled races, arts and crafts, and the fur auction.
We went home to warm up and came back at night with the guys once they were off work. Anchorage had a wonderful fireworks show and a carnival, but the weather got the best of us and we had to call it a night. We all had so much fun, and the cold weather is getting us ready for our trip to Fairbanks next weekend.

Moose Crossing

A mom and baby moose were walking across the road today, and I had my camera in the car. I know that the video is awful but keep in mind I was driving but I didn't want to miss it because it was so light outside. Only in Alaska. Today was the start of Fur Rondy, hopefully depending on the weather we will be able to get out Saturday and Sunday and be able to go to some of the events.

Snow is back...

It didn't leave us for long, but it was long enough to start enjoying the "warmer" weather. It hadn't snow in Anchorage for two weeks and on top of that we had record breaking highs for the month of February. So basically the two weeks was long enough for a lot of the snow to melt, finally see our driveway, and the "grass" (which honestly is some kind of hay that they must put on the ground so that when all the snow does melt your able to see some kind of green tint plant, it is a sense of false hope). This morning when I woke up we had already gotten several inches of snow, the shovel returns.

This is what they call "Break" , (since Alaska doesn't really have much of a spring). The "Break" is the period of time in which winter meets summer. From what we have heard it creates one big mess too, and most likely the roads will be shut down for a few days. What happens is that it gets warm enough for some snow to start melting, and water is just about everywhere, but before that clears up it gets below freezing again and starts snowing, so all that snow that turned into water turns into ice. So unless you have 18 dogs and are sledding to work, you can't really go anywhere. The only really good news in all this is that it has started and everyday that passes is a closer day to summer.

Fur Rondy!

Wow two posts today!

Fur Rondy starts this weekend and we are making sure to be a part of as many activities as we can. The Idirod takes place during this time and the race starts downtown Anchorage. Other activities include; sporting events such as hockey and basketball, Fireworks and a Carnival, Frostbite footraces, ice skating, snow sculptures, ice bowling and all other crazy activities that I will have to inform you about.

Fur Rondy started out in the 1930's, when only about 3,000 people called Alaska their home. Staying alive and warm was the only winter past time, so during the middle of February when miners and trappers came into Anchorage they decided to hold a three day festival, which back then consisted of mostly just sporting events and a bonfire downtown at the end of the weekend. If you have time you should check out the official website and look at all the events.

Moving on up...

Goodmorning,

It is a nice day here in Anchorage, we are still having warmer weather, it is about 30 degrees right now. Everything is slowly melting away, but that will all stop soon because it is suppose to snow later in the week. We did enjoy the "warmer" weather while we had it, are car on the other hand has completely changed from red to brown...we think it looks more rustic!

Josh ranks up today! That means three things in the air force world... an ounce of more respect, another stripe, and more money.

This weekend we took it easy and went to a friends house for pizza night. Some how on Sunday Josh was able to talk me in to go see the movie Shutter Island. I never understand why people actually pay money to be scarde, but it turned out to be one of better movies we have seen since we moved here...Josh wants me to add not better than Avatar though.

I am an offical student of University of Alaska Anchorage, Go Seawolves!!! Right now I am signed up for orientation, and start classes this May.

Puddle of Mud!

Green Trees finally! This is driving out to our neighborhood

Snow Everywhere! The parking lot snow piles are higher than the buildings

I'm back! Sorry no postings lately...Josh was sick and had to go to the hospital on Monday, and then right around the time he got to feeling better I got sick. So it's been a bunch of sneezing and sleeping. We both got sick last weekend in what felt like a blizzard, we had gotten over two feet of snow in 48 hours, where as this weekend was something new for us.

Since we have arrived in Anchorage it hasn't been higher than 29 degrees. Though this weekend when I was leaving the store and walking back to my car I wasn't paying attention and stepped in a puddle. At first I didn't think twice about what happened and then it dawned on me...we don't have puddles we have ice! This high this weekend got up to 37 degrees! When there is 6 feet of snow everywhere, there will be water!

Dear Target

Dear Target...please don't put all the winter clothes away and start putting out these sun dresses. It has been snowing for several days now and the high never goes above 25. Snow doesn't even start melting till May. SO target tell me why you put these summer clothes out now?

Happy Super Bowl Sunday...our heater is broken and we are sitting here freezing on the sofa! I think it might actually be warmer outside than in here!

We had dinner at a friends house last night, a guy that Josh works with. His name was Josh as well and his wife's name was Carrie. She made a recipe from PF Chang so it was definitely a nice change. They are in their late twenties and moved to Alaska around the same time that we did.

happy birthday to me

And the birthday week began...

Alaska was so nice to me on my birthday, it was below freezing and snowing all week! How did it know that I wanted to do a little more snow shoveling...and that I didn't really want to wear a cute outfit to dinner...I wanted to wear lots of coats and snow boots, thanks Alaska!

All kidding aside I had a wonderful birthday. Wednesday night Josh took me to Simon and Seaforts, which is located right on the water. It's rated one of Alaska's top resturants and was nothing less. We have great service and amazing food. We are defentaly excited to go back there in the summer when its light enough to actually see the view.

Thursday night we got together with some friends we have meet and headed downtown to several local bars, it was great to experiece the local night life and was a lot of fun. Driving back into the neighborhood we had spotted several guests at the house wanting to say happy birthday...MOOSE MOOSE! A female moose and her baby were walking around the neighborhood. It wouldn't be an Alaskan birthday without them showing up!

For the rest of the weekend we are playing it by ear depending on how the weather turns out!

Thanks again for all the birthday wishes!
