Brett...well mom you should have know this would have turned into a blog story sooner than later. Well 21 years ago my mother gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, as she looked down at those bright blue eyes and blonde hair the name...Brett...came to mind...keep in mind this is still the 80's and drinking durning pregeancy wasn't as frowned apon as it is now.
Now if my mother was reading this behind your sholder this is what you would be hearing, "I had no idea that people wouldn't consider that a girls name, because you know after all it is both boys and girls name...just like Kerry ( My sister )."
...well the name Kerry is held by 52% girls and 48% boys...Brett on the other hand is only shared by 1.3% girls which to be exact is 23 girls in the whole united states...so yes I think it is fair to say that this is NOT a little baby girls name.
Since I was a little baby I have always gone by Ali, which is short for my middle name Alison.
However, no longer am I ashamed to named Brett...even though the number one question I get it, why is that your name, did your parents want a boy? ...maybe on my moms death bed she will actually tell me the truth behind my name, but my mom's healthy so you all just need to hold on and wait for that blog.
So at both work and school I now go by Brett

Dear Brett Alison - First, your Mom intended to call you Ali from the moment you were born. And That's all we ever knew you by.
ReplyDeleteYou may wonder why she gave you the name Brett at all and I can't answer that. However, the name Terry (which is my legal name) was principally a girl's name when I was born and growing up. I received a lot of my mail addressed to Miss Terry Emrick which I sort of resented. And, there were times I would rather have had a name like Ralph or Jack (real boys' names but now, I am very happy with my name including my middle name of Lamar. Both names have gradually become both a girls' as well as a boys' name. Love, Grandpa
PS - I think Brett is a very pretty name!!!
From your Mom (she is blog posting challanged) -- Just for the record I DID NOT DRINK while I was pregnant. AND the reason for your name is exactly as I always said, we were looking for a gender neutral name with an Irish origin. I thought it went well with Alison, which is the name your dad wanted to use. I STILL like your name, but I know it has caused problems for you. I never thought it would cause so much discussion. So, Brett Ali, I think you are just as cute as your name. Of course, I am your mother. The part about me being in good health, hm. . . . . . a few more months at this job and I may have high blood pressure and heart disease!
ReplyDeleteI know about gender neutral names. I'm married to Carroll..my husband! Whenever the phone rings and I answer they ask if this is Carroll and I have to answer, no that's my husband. Of course you know who we're talking about...Josh's grandpa Frazee. Hang in there, Brett! ;)
ReplyDeleteCan I still call you Ali??? =)
ReplyDeletehaha yes Tarryn please do!
